How to Check the Bin Sensor

How to Check the Bin Sensor on Your KitchenAid Ice Maker

Perfectly chilled beverages are a staple in every home, and the key to achieving this lies in the efficient operation of your ice maker. The undercounter ice bin sensor, also known as an ice maker sensor, is a component that ensures your ice maker functions optimally by monitoring ice levels and preventing overflow. This article will delve into the workings of an undercounter ice bin sensor, offer troubleshooting tips for common issues, and explain why KitchenAid undercounter ice makers are the ideal choice for your home.

What is an Undercounter Ice Bin Sensor?

The ice level sensor is located on the right side wall of the ice storage bin and monitors the ice levels. Its main function is to detect when the ice reaches a specific threshold, ensuring your ice maker runs efficiently and consistently produces ice as needed. If the sensor is blocked or dirty, the ice maker could stop ice production.

Troubleshooting Undercounter Ice Bin Sensor Issues

If your ice maker has stopped producing ice or is overflowing with ice, check the following:

  • Clean the sensor. Mineral buildup can cause the sensor to malfunction and should be part of your regular maintenance program. The sensor can be cleaned with a soft towel and warm, soapy water.
  • Check for blockages. Ensure that the bin sensor is not obstructed by the ice scoop or any other items that may be in the bin. We don't recommend storing anything in the bin other than the ice that is produced and the supplied ice scoop. Remember to store the ice scoop in the holder to avoid blocking the bin sensor.
  • Level the ice maker. The ice maker must be leveled to function properly. Depending upon where you install the ice maker, you may need to make several adjustments to level it. You may also use the leveling legs to lower the height of the ice maker for under-counter installations.
