Vent Not Removing Odor or Vapor - Over-the-Range Microwave

Possible Solutions

Do the filter(s) need to be changed or cleaned?

IMPORTANT: Before cleaning or replacing components, make sure all controls are off and the microwave oven is cool.  Always follow label instructions on cleaning products.

Is the Grease filter(s) clean or new?

Grease filters are on the underside of microwave oven. Clean monthly, or as prompted by filter status indicator (some models).

This part can be ordered at our Purchase Genuine Parts site.

Is the Charcoal filter clean or new?

The charcoal filter is only used when microwave is NOT vented externally.  The charcoal filter cannot be cleaned and should be replaced about every 6 months, or as prompted by filter status indicator (some models).

This part can be ordered at our Purchase Genuine Parts site.

Remove filter(s) and test for improved performance.

If performance is NOT improved with filter(s) removed and unit is vented externally with wall damper opening correctly or insect screen clean:

  • You may need to have your vent cleaned by installer or handyman.

If performance is improved, obtain replacement filter(s).

  • Do not continue to operate microwave with filter(s) removed.

Is the unit vented externally or internally?

Determine if microwave is vented externally or internally:

  • Turn on vent fan
  • If air flow is not felt at the top front of microwave the unit is vented externally.
  • If microwave is vented externally check exterior wall cap damper for proper operation (damper flap open when vent fan is on, or insect screen not obstructed).

Refer to the Installation Instructions for more information on vent configuration.
