Smart Thermometer - Usage Questions

KitchenAid Smart Thermometer - Usage Questions

Can I use it for anything other than meat?

No, at this time, Smart Thermometer is designed for use with common and suitable cuts of meat only.

Cooking with metallic foil

If your recipe calls for wrapping or covering meat in tinfoil, the Smart Thermometer must be pierced through the foil itself and into the meat. To maintain a connection, the black tip of the thermometer must be clear of any metallic foil obstruction.

Where can I use the Smart Thermometer?

Oven, Grill, Pan/Skillet, and Smoker are all recommended methods for cooking with the Smart Thermometer.  Here is some information on other cooking methods:

  • Air Fry: Yes! The KitchenAid Smart Thermometer is great for air frying, with ambient temperature readings up to 572°F and internal meat temperatures up to 212°F. Be sure to keep the dock next to your air fryer for continuous temperature monitoring while you cook.
  • Deep Fry: We do not recommend using your Smart Thermometer for deep frying. However, you can use it in your air fryer.
  • Sous Vide: We do not recommend using your Smart Thermometer for sous vide.
  • Outdoor Grill: Yes! The KitchenAid Smart Thermometer is great for grilling, with grill temperatures up to 572°F and internal meat temperatures up to 212°F. Be sure to keep the dock next to your grill for continuous temperature monitoring while you cook.
  • Microwave, Pressure Cooker, Steam Oven, or Slow Cooker: No. Never expose the thermometer probe to excessive pressure or use it in the microwave. We do not recommend using your Smart Thermometer in a Slow Cooker or Steam Cooker.

What are the temperature limits?

The KitchenAid Smart Thermometer, when used correctly, can withstand up to 212° Fahrenheit (100° Celsius) of internal meat temperature and 572° Fahrenheit (300° Celsius) of ambient cooking temperature for any duration. It can also withstand flare-ups of 1100° Fahrenheit (593° Celsius) for up to 3 minutes. The dock should never be placed on a hot surface.

How does the ambient temperature work?

Ambient Temperature is the temperature of the air surrounding your food while it cooks. It may not exactly match your oven or grill's set temperature because your appliance cycles on and off to maintain heat, which can shift a little during cooking.  Monitoring the ambient temperature helps you understand the actual cooking environment your food is experiencing.

The sensor needs to be exposed to temperatures over 100°F to calculate an ambient temperature
Ambient temperature readings can take some time to calculate, in which case "--/--" will be displayed. The lower the temp, the longer it can take.

Where should I place the dock when cooking?

While cooking/in use, the dock should remain at a close but safe distance from the Thermometer Probe (up to 10ft). As it’s magnetic, you may find it easy to attach to a surface on or near your cooking appliance. Do not place the dock directly in contact with a hot surface. When not in use, the Smart Thermometer can be placed on a fridge door (magnetic) or in a drawer. Keep away from unnecessary moisture.

How do I change the cycle after starting?

Click stop monitoring and start over.

Can I connect multiple thermometers?

Yes, you can set up one thermometer at a time, up to four thermometers. Begin by removing the thermometer you want to connect from the dock while leaving all other thermometers in their docks. Repeat this step up to 4 times to use up to 4 thermometers simultaneously while cooking.

How do I monitor two thermometers simultaneously?

  1. Set up each cook session separately. Once you’ve selected the Meat and Doneness for one, you'll be taken to the cooking screen. Tap the back arrow in the upper left-hand corner to get back to your list of devices.
  2. Set up the other thermometers for the cooks.
  3. Return to your list of devices to navigate between the different cooks, or monitor all of them simultaneously.

Does it matter which dock I put the thermometer in?

No, it doesn’t matter which dock you place a thermometer back into. Once the cook session has ended, remove the thermometer from the meat. Let your thermometers cool down after all that hard work and keep them out of the docks until all cook sessions are over. Give your thermometers a wash before redocking.
