Gelato FAQ’s

What is gelato?

Gelato is the Italian cousin of ice cream. It starts with a similar custard base as ice cream but has a higher proportion of milk and a lower percentage of cream and eggs (or no eggs at all). It is churned at a much slower rate, incorporating less air and leaving the gelato denser (though not harder than traditional ice cream), giving the gelato a creamier, luscious texture and mouthfeel than conventional ice cream.

Franzese gelato mixes are:

  • Kosher
  • GMO-free
  • Gluten-free
  • Free of trans-fats

Do these products contain HFCS?

There is no High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) in our products.

What type of sweeteners do Franzese gelato products contain?

While sugar is the primary sweetener, other ingredients such as dextrose can add additional sweetness to the product.

Do the Franzese gelato products contain artificial sweeteners?

The Franzese gelato products do not contain artificial sweeteners.

What’s the “best by” shelf life of the gelato?

Franzese gelato mix has a best buy shelf life of 36 months.

Does that mean the gelato mix is expired after the 36 months and is unsafe to eat?

No, the gelato mix is still safe to consume after the 36 months.  “Best by,” dates were developed by the food industry and retailers to highlight when maximum flavor and texture will be experienced.  After the 36 months, flavors and textures will begin to fade and not be as great as they are within the “Best by,” date.
