Pitting or Rusting on Cooking Utensils

Why are the utensils pitting or rusting? 

Below are reasons why you could be experiencing some pitting or rusting on your utensils

  • Washing non-dishwasher-safe metals
  • Allowing items to remain in the dishwasher too long
  • Purchasing low-quality stainless silverware and utensils
  • High levels of salt or acid from foods

Resolution

Slight rust can be restored with metal polish. Heavily rusted items generally cannot be repaired. Purchasing good quality, stainless items, and minimizing the time items that are left in the dishwasher before/after the cycle and reduce the amount of rust that may develop on certain items. Keep silver and stainless items separated.
