Warping/Distortion of Plastics

Possible Solution

Is the water turned on?

The water supply must be completely open to wash and rinse the dishes properly.

Before loading the Dishwasher, is it dishwasher-safe?

Knowing which materials are dishwasher-safe is crucial for maintaining the longevity of your items and ensuring efficient cleaning. Most modern dishwashers, including KitchenAid models, can handle a variety of materials, but not everything can withstand the heat and water pressure. Common dishwasher-safe materials include glass, ceramic, and most plastics marked as dishwasher-safe. However, always check specific guidelines provided by the dishware manufacturer.

Some items should never be loaded into your dishwasher, such as wooden utensils, which can warp or crack from heat and moisture. Certain metals, like copper and cast iron, can be damaged or lose their finish. Delicate glassware and items not labeled as dishwasher-safe may break or shatter during the wash cycle.

Was a heated dry cycle used?

Heated-dry cycles can cause temperatures much higher than even some dishwasher-safe plastics may not be able to tolerate. Consider using the air-dry option or loading items in the uppermost racks and away from the heating element.

Was a high-temperature cycle used?

Some cycle and dry options can drive final rinse temperatures to over 150F, which can cause some plastics to warp or misshapen.

Were the items loaded correctly?

Don't force plastic items into crowded areas or allow heavy objects to rest on them. As the plastic is heated, it can become softer and deform by the forces acting on it.
