Starting and Using the Trash Compactor

How to Start and Use a KitchenAid Trash Compactor

A trash compactor reduces household waste volume, cutting trips to the bin and helping keep your kitchen tidy. Use this guide for starting and using the trash compactor to set up your Whirlpool trash compactor, run your first cycle, operate it day to day, and keep it in top condition. If you are wondering how to use a trash compactor or asking how does a trash compactor work, the steps below will help.

To start the compactor:

  1. Open container. Load trash.
  2. Leave the key knob in the On position.
  3. Set the Solid Cycle switch to Off.
  4. Close container.
  5. Lift the foot pedal to start the cycle.

Care, Maintenance, and Troubleshooting

Unplug the compactor before cleaning. Wipe the exterior and control panel with a soft cloth and mild detergent; avoid abrasive cleaners. Clean the drawer interior and ram shield with a damp cloth and never spray water into the cabinet. Replace charcoal filters as directed in your user guide and use baking soda for added deodorizing. Periodically tighten mounting hardware, clear debris from drawer glides, and recheck leveling.

If the unit will not start, confirm the drawer is fully closed and latched, the power cord is plugged into a grounded outlet, and the household circuit breaker is on. If the ram stalls or will not move, reduce the load, remove prohibited items, and inspect for obstructions along the rails or under the bag.
