Trash Compactor Drawer Won't Open
My KitchenAid Compactor Door or Drawer Will Not Open
If your trash compactor drawer won’t open, a few simple checks can often free it up. This guide outlines quick steps to try first, common mechanical causes, and when to schedule professional service. Always disconnect power before inspecting or attempting repairs.
Quick checks to try first
Rule out basic issues before diving into repairs:
- Confirm power and controls: Make sure the compactor is plugged into a working outlet. Test the outlet with another appliance or reset the circuit breaker/GFCI if tripped. Verify the power switch is On and any drawer lock feature is disengaged. If your trash compactor drawer won’t open, check the garbage compactor manual for your model’s control layout.
- Look for obstructions: Check the drawer tracks and around the bin for items wedged in place, such as glass, metal lids, or bulky bags. Use a flashlight along both rails and the front lip. Remove debris carefully to avoid bending tracks or rollers.
- Try a gentle manual open: With power Off, hold the handle and pull straight out while slightly lifting or lowering the front edge to realign the rollers. If it resists, press inward a bit, then pull again to relieve tension. Do not force the drawer if the ram might be down—see the ram section below.
Is the ram fully raised?
The drawer will open only when the ram is fully raised. To ensure the ram is raised all the way, follow the instructions below:
- Models with a key knob (or key switch): Turn the key knob (key-switch) to Start and release.
- Models with push button controls: Press Off, and then press On.
Is the Solid cycle engaged?
The Solid cycle keeps the ram in the down position until it is released, keeping the trash compacted at the best level. The drawer remains locked until you reset it by lifting up the foot pedal.
