What is the Proper Location and Environment for a Refrigerator
What is the Proper Location and Environment for your KitchenAid Refrigerator
Choosing the right spot for your refrigerator supports efficient cooling, safe food storage, and long-term reliability. Airflow, ambient temperature, and a stable surface all play important roles. Use the guidelines below to select a location that promotes consistent performance and energy savings. Refer to your Owner's Manual for specific requirements for your model.
Location Requirements
This refrigerator is designed for indoor, household use only. It is intended for use in a location where the temperature ranges from a minimum of 55°F (13°C) to a maximum of 110°F (43°C). Operating the refrigerator outside the recommended temperature range may result in improper temperatures, temperature fluctuation, and/or not operating at peak performance.
For best performance, do not install the refrigerator near an oven, radiator, or other heat source. Also, do not install the refrigerator behind a cabinet door or block the base grille.
Spacing Requirements
To ensure proper ventilation for your refrigerator, allow for a ¹/4" (6.35 mm) space on each side and at the top. When installing your refrigerator next to a fixed wall,
leave 2¹⁄2" (6.35 cm) minimum clearance on each side to allow for the door to swing open.
Locations and Conditions to Avoid
Keep the refrigerator away from heat sources that raise cabinet temperatures and increase run time. Avoid installing it next to ovens, ranges, dishwashers that vent heat, or heating vents. Refer to your Owner's Manual for specific requirements for your model.
Basements and garages often fall outside ideal temperature ranges. In hot weather, garage heat can overwork the cooling system; in cold weather, low temperatures can alter compressor cycling and cause freezer fluctuations or partial thawing. Unless the space is insulated and climate-controlled, these areas are not recommended for standard refrigerators.
