Motor or Compressor Runs too Much - Side by Side Refrigerator

Possible Solutions

New Refrigerator, More Efficient

Remember that your new refrigerator will run longer than your old one due to its high-efficiency motor.

Your new refrigerator has been designed with a high-efficiency compressor to optimize energy and better regulate temperatures to match cooling demand. You may notice that it operates differently than your previously owned refrigerator. It is normal for the high-efficiency compressor to run for extended periods of time at varying speeds in order to consume only the energy necessary for optimum efficiency.

Is the refrigerator located in a garage?

This refrigerator is designed for indoor, household use only.  It is intended for use in a location where the temperature ranges from a minimum of 55°F (13°C) to a maximum of 110°F (43°C).  Operating the refrigerator outside of the recommended temperature range may result in improper temperatures, temperature fluctuation and/or the refrigerator to not operate at peak performance.

Is the refrigerator located near a heat source?

It is recommended that you do not install the refrigerator near an oven, radiator, or other heat sources. For best performance, do not install the refrigerator behind a cabinet door or block the base grille.

Is there enough air circulation space around the refrigerator?

To ensure proper ventilation for your refrigerator, allow for space on each side and at the top. When installing your refrigerator next to a fixed wall, leave the minimum clearance on each side to allow for the door to swing open.  Please refer to the Owner's Manual or Installation Instructions for the specific requirements for your Refrigerator.

To ensure proper ventilation for your refrigerator, allow for space on each side and at the top. Allow for a 3 3/4" (9.5 cm) clearance at the top and sides and a ¹⁄2" (1.25 cm) clearance between the appliances.

Have new food and/or beverages been recently added?

  • Adding a large amount of food or beverages will increase the temperature of the refrigerator.
  • The motor will run longer to cool the refrigerator back down.
  • Wait for 24 to 48 for normal temperatures to return to the compartments
  • If your refrigerator was recently installed, it may take up to 24 to 48 hours for your refrigerator to reach the correct temperature.

Are the doors opened frequently?

Temperature will raise when the doors are opened often, which will cause the refrigerator to run more. In order to keep your unit cool, try to limit the continuous opening of the doors.

Are the controls set correctly for the surrounding conditions?

Temperature controls are preset at the factory to the "mid setting" which should be correct for normal household use. The controls are set correctly when beverages are as cold as you would like. Setting the controls too low can cause the refrigerator to run longer than it needs to.
