When to Change the Water Filter

When to Change the KitchenAid Refrigerator Water Filter

It is recommended that the KitchenAid water filter be replaced every 6 months, when the indicator light comes on, or as needed.  A clogged or incorrectly installed water filter will reduce the water flow to the ice maker and dispenser, which could result in small ice cubes, low ice production and/or longer dispensing times.

If the filter is clogged and you are not able to immediately replace it, leave the filter out so the water system is in bypass mode. With the filter removed, the water system will continue to operate, bypassing the filter, and the clogged filter will not cause slow water dispensing or low ice production. However, in order to have filtered water, you will need to install a new filter.

NOTE:  One or two drops of water immediately after dispensing is normal.  It may be necessary to hold the container under the dispenser for 2 to 3 seconds after releasing the dispenser button.

Refrigerators with an Indicator Light

Most refrigerators will have an indicator light to tell you when it’s time to replace the water filter. The water filter should be changed when the filter status light/indicator (if applicable) located on the temperature control panel alerts you that the filter needs to be changed.

Refrigerators without an Indicator Light

If a filter status light/indicator is not present, the filter should be changed every 6 months. If the water flow to the water dispenser or ice maker noticeably decreases before 6 months have passed, you may need to replace the water filter cartridge more often. Decreased water flow is a sign that the filter is clogged and needs to be replaced.
