Cleaning the Metal Food Grinder
Cleaning the KitchenAid Metal Food Grinder
What needs to be hand-washed?
The Grinder’s main body, grind screw, tray, and collar are constructed of aluminum and should be washed by hand. The grinding blade is constructed of stainless steel and should be washed by hand. All metal parts are not dishwasher safe.
What can be washed in the dishwasher?
The included sausage stuffer parts are made of plastic and are dishwasher-safe. The brush has nylon bristles, stainless steel wire, and plastic handles and is dishwasher-safe. All plastic parts are dishwasher safe.
Removing Oxidation
Oxidation or gray or black film residue on the attachment is normally caused by cleaning it in the dishwasher or using the incorrect cleaners. This is caused by a natural reaction of aluminum to chemicals found in dishwasher detergents and other harsh cleaners. To help remove the oxidation, try the following:
- Disassemble the meat grinder
- Create a cleaning solution of warm, soapy water and vinegar. A common ratio is 3 cups of vinegar to 2 quarts of water.
- Soak the parts for about 30 minutes.
- Remove and rinse with clean water. Use a gentle sponge or nylon brush to scrub the parts.
- Rinse thoroughly and towel dry. Use a dry, clean towel to wipe all parts immediately after rinsing. Do not allow them to air dry.
