KitchenAid Food Storage Containers Not Sealing
KitchenAid Food Storage Containers Not Sealing or Leaking
When transitioning from single-use plastics to eco-friendly glass storage, most home cooks expect a leakproof upgrade. Few things are more frustrating than pulling a glass container out of your tote bag only to find salad dressing pooled at the bottom—or opening your fridge to find yesterday’s meal dried out because the seal failed. When a glass container leaks or fails to close tightly, it is almost always due to an issue with the silicone seal or lid fitting.
Below is a breakdown of why glass storage containers fail to seal or leak, along with practical solutions to fix and prevent the issue.
Check the Gasket
The soft silicone ring along the lid's perimeter is responsible for creating an airtight barrier against the hard glass rim. When leaks occur, this gasket is usually the primary culprit.
-
Misalignment or Twisted Gaskets: The seal on the glass containers can easily be removed for a deep cleaning, but installed incorrectly could cause an improper fit. When replacing the seal ensure the gasket is fully seated into the channel and pointing towards the top of the lid. See picture below.
-
Trapped Food Residue & Oils: Fine food particles, grease, or soapy film build up under the gasket over time, preventing a friction seal. Remove the gasket during deep cleaning. Wash the track and gasket with warm, soapy water, allow both to dry completely, and reassemble. Check out Cleaning KitchenAid Food Storage Containers for more information.
-
Thermal Shrinkage & Stretching: Exposure to high heat in the dishwasher's bottom rack or microwave could cause the gasket to lose its elasticity or warp. Hand-wash the gaskets whenever possible, or place lids exclusively on the top rack of the dishwasher.
.

Container Damage
Because glass is rigid, any irregularity on the rim prevents the soft gasket from seating evenly.
- Micro-Chips on the Rim: Bumping glass containers together in cabinet storage could cause tiny, sharp chips along the upper rim. Even if microscopic, a chip creates an air channel past the seal. Run your finger carefully along the top rim of the glass base. If you feel a sharp chip or crack, discontinue using that container for liquids or airtight dry storage.
